I would like you to consider your personal power on a scale of one to ten.
Let's use the analogy of the sun, you can see from the picture, how much can you radiate, how much heat do you have, that you could put out there.
Five is half way, below 5 is below average and above 5 is above average. Give yourself a rating out of ten where you sit for personal power.
Here is some guidelines, as to how to work out your ratings.
Personal power is the way you walk into a room. Do you own the space around you?
You can tell somebody with low personal power . They are breathy when they talk because they don't believe they have the right to suck up any air in the room. To speak, is to suck air in. If you don't breath and draw in enough breath you can't speak up and speak out.
Their shoulders are hunched slightly, because they are trying to unconsciously take up less room by becoming physically smaller.
If you were to ask to interrupt a meeting, could you just knock on the door, walk in , say excuse me, check to see if anyone needs anything and walk out. Or would you be a little bit sheepish coming in, a little bit concerned that you are upsetting people or interrupting people? When you enter a room, it is a great indicator of your natural setting for your personal power.
What rating do you give yourself when you’re outside your comfort zone and what would you give yourself when you’re inside your comfort zone?
In my coaching practice, we work around this idea of personal power, and ensuring you own your own space and feel comfortable in your own skin.
There’s a whole bunch of issues that go along with not having enough personal power, and my personal goal is to work with people to make sure that they are radiating as much heat as they can, so that people notice them and success follows.
Depending on how many people I’m talking to in an audience, will be how much I need to dial that up. So if I was talking to 2000 people on stage I would need to have my volume dial high, very high to reach the back of the room. When I’m working with people say one on one in a coaching situation I can turn my personal power right down to about a one or a two just so that the session is not too intense.
So just bear that in mind, I want you to have that breadth of behaviour to turn it up and down as you require it. It is a great skill to have and one of 5 key essential characteristics for success.
Do two ratings, do one ratings for when you know its low, that’s outside your comfort zone, and then do a rating for when you are totally in the zone and comfortable, and that will give you an idea of your breadth of behaviour. So that you’ve got access to this much say from a three to an eight.
Then give yourself a 3rd rating out of ten for what you would like it to be in 12 months from now (if you were to work on it)? That will give you a bit of an idea as to what the gap is and how much work you’re going to need to get it up, as we all know how important personal power is to personal and professional success. If you haven’t got a lot of personal power you tend to not get a lot of promotions, people tend not to notice you, it is quite easy to be invisible, you tend to people please, inability to say no and a general lack of confidence (to be confident you need these 3 things in balance, self belief, self value, and being self assured).
I want to see that you have a gap, because if you have a gap you are sending a very clear message to the unconscious mind that you want to close that gap and that you want to make sure that you have access to as much of your personal power as possible. Just remember, you can always go to the next level on personal power, it is one of those life skills that you grow and develop over your lifetime.
Once you have your ratings, feel free to give me a call to discuss some strategies for closing the gap and achieving full breadth of behaviour. For I AM Woman readers, you can have a free 30 minute personal power update session.
Have fun radiating your unique personal power heat. I look forward to touching base soon.
