All my life I have been fascinated by creativity. How does it work? How can you improve it? As a artist, writer, speaker and business person I experimented with these questions.
I love to see people doing what they're born to do. I love people who approach things like an artist - with courage, discipline and inspiration - and who treat their life as their main work of art.
Creative people have the ability to assess risk. They have good problem-solving skills with the ability to cope with frustration and anxiety. They enjoy life and have fun.
The creative person always walks two steps into the darkness. Everyone can see what’s in the light. The real creative heroes delve in the darkness of the unknown.
It’s where you discover ‘other things’. When the new things are discovered, they have no name and defy description, which is the way ideas work.
The creative spirit is within you, whatever you do. The catch, is to liberate your creative spirit. For creativity to happen, something within us must be brought to life. The universal language of the creative spirit is joy, responsibility and trust.
When you are relaxed, and your mind is blank, all of a sudden into your head pops the solution to a problem you’ve been mulling over. You can’t help but wonder why you didn’t think of it before? In such moments you’ve made contact with the creative spirit.
The creative spirit is more than an occasional insight. When the creative spirit stirs, it animates a way of being, a desire to innovate, to explore new ways of doing things, to bring dreams to reality.
No matter who you are, it is at hand for anyone who has the urge to tinker, to explore new possibilities, to leave things better than before. You just need to ask the question. Most people, just never ask.
Write up what experiences you have had with creativity. The objective is to highlight to you that you are already creative. In fact, to be human is to be creative. Just some people will put up their hand and declare that they are creative, the rest are creative, they just don’t defined themselves that way.
By agreeing that you are creative, it encourages more confidence to expand your creativity and to apply courage, discipline and inspiration into every facet of your life.
Examples of creativity are cooking, teaching, gardening. Parenting is creative, as the child grows you need to adapt to the ever changing landscape of their development. Business is creative, that is why we love it, because it’s stimulating and creative. Every job is creative, if you choose to innovate and continuously improve, adding value to your role through new suggestions and action.
Creativity is vital to everything we do. When you take a new approach to what you’re doing, you’re using your creativity. When you go beyond the traditional ways of solving a problem that influences others, that is your creativity.
What brings the creative spirit to life is passion, persistence and humour. It is also important to note that anxiety is a necessary springboard to creativity.
What kills creativity is our inner voice of self-judgment. When it is speaking, say thank you and acknowledge that it is trying to keep you safe on some level. Ask it to step aside, while you get on with being creative.
